CIMIC Group’s CPB Contractors has won a $175 million contract to deliver the northern section of the NorthLink WA project between Ellenbrook and Muchea.

The contract win represents the third and final stage of the $1.12 billion State and Federally funded road project, linking Morley and Muchea.

The design and construct contract involves construction of a free-flowing dual carriageway between Ellenbrook and Muchea, with new intersections at Stock Road, Neaves Road and Brand Highway, bridges built over local roads, railways and Ellen Brook as well as separate cycling and pedestrian paths.

Construction is scheduled to begin in the middle of the year and be completed in 2019.

Work has already begun on the southern section of the NorthLink WA project, with that component being completed by John Holland.

A joint venture between BGC Contracting and Laing O’Rourke, Great Northern Connect (GNC), won the $417 million central component of the project last month.

The overall NorthLink WA project is expected to generate about 1000 jobs.

Transport Minister Bill Marmion said traffic congestion would be alleviated as drivers would be able to bypass up to 16 sets of traffic lights and two railway crossings.

"Safety issues will be addressed at four of the State's most dangerous intersections, with more than 150 kilometres of road safety barriers to protect vehicle occupants and separate oncoming traffic,” he said.

"This project will not only create safer communities by reducing traffic on local roads, it will connect those communities through the inclusion of separate pedestrian and cycle paths."

Once completed, NorthLink WA will provide a continuous connection from the Perth Airport area to Muchea, and together with the Gateway WA and Perth Freight Link projects will be a major part of a high standard freight connection to Fremantle Port.

CPB Contractors managing director Román Garrido said delivering new and upgraded transport infrastructure within live traffic environments was a core capability for CPB Contractors and the safe and efficient management of the traffic network during construction was a priority.

“Working closely with Main Roads WA, we are pleased to contribute our cost-effective design and construction solutions to deliver the project’s planned operational, community and environmental benefits,” he said.

CPB Contractors has previously undertaken major roads initiatives for Main Roads WA, most recently leading the Alliance that delivered the $1 billion Gateway WA Perth Airport and Freight Access project.
